thy·roid per·ox·i·dase an·ti·bodies Thyroid peroxidase (TPO), an enzyme normally found in the thyroid gland, plays an important role in the production of thyroid hormones as in the creation of Thyroxine. A TPO test detects antibodies against TPO in the blood. The presence of TPO antibodies in your blood suggests that the cause of thyroid disease is an autoimmune disorder, such as Hashimoto's disease or Graves' disease. In autoimmune disorders, your immune system makes antibodies that mistakenly attack normal tissue.
Your blood spot samples will test: Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) Antibodies levels.
The presence of Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) Antibodies is a good indication that:
- The person�s hypothyroidism is likely caused by an autoimmune disorder, like Hashimoto�s Disease
A low level of thyroid hormones (hypothyroidism) can cause symptoms, such as:
- Weight gain
- Fatigue
- Dry skin
- Hair loss
- Intolerance to cold
- Constipation
A high level of thyroid hormones (hypothyroidism) can cause symptoms, such as:
- Sweating
- Rapid heart rate
- Anxiety
- Tremors
- Fatigue
- Difficulty sleeping
- Sudden weight loss
- Protruding eyes

Your test results will be returned to us within 5 to 7 business days from the date the lab receives your sample. Once we know that your results are available, we will send you an email so that you can login and review them.
NOTE: Per state laws, if you live in California, you will need to email us a prescription from a medical practitioner (could be a physician, physician's assistant, naturopath etc.) in order for us to process your order and send you your test. New York residents may not receive tests per state laws. Having your tests shipped to you outside of California or New York may be the best way to go. (The Air Quality tests and Pet tests do NOT need a prescription and can be sent anywhere needed.)
Because the test kits include postage-paid return shipping, there is an extra shipping charge of $10.00 that will be added to your test order.
Testing for thyroid antibodies, such as thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPO), is usually done to help diagnose an autoimmune thyroid disease and to distinguish it from other forms of thyroid dysfunction. This test may be ordered to help investigate the cause of an enlarged thyroid (goiter) or other signs and symptoms associated with low or high thyroid hormone levels.
Thyroid autoantibodies develop when a person's immune system mistakenly targets components of the thyroid gland or thyroid proteins, leading to chronic inflammation of the thyroid (thyroiditis), tissue damage, and/or disruption of thyroid function.
Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies are antibodies created when the body attacks the thyroid gland. When TPO antibodies are produced, it causes a decrease in thyroxine production and subsequently results in hypothyroidism also known as underactive thyroid.
